آلوئیس اسپنجر: زندگی‌نامه و آثار شرق‌شناسی

آلوئیس اسپنجر (متولد ۳ سپتامبر ۱۸۱۳ در ناسریث، تایرول؛ در ۱۹ دسامبر ۱۸۹۳ در هایدلبرگ) شرق‌شناس اتریشی بود.

او پزشکی و علوم طبیعی و همچنین زبان‌های شرقی را در دانشگاه وین آموخت. در سال ۱۸۳۶ به لندن رفت و با ارل منستر در نگارش Geschichte der Kriegswissenschaften bei den mohammedanischen Völkern، «تاریخ علوم نظامی در میان مردمان مسلمان» همکاری کرد و در سال ۱۸۴۳ به کلکته کوچ کرد تا رییس کالج دهلی شود. در این سمت ترجمه‌های زیادی از زبان‌های اروپایی به هندستانی انجام شد.

در سال ۱۸۴۸ به لاک‌نادو فرستاده شد تا فهرست کتابخانه سلطنتی آنجا را تهیه کند. جلد اول این کتاب در کلکته در ۱۸۵۴ منتشر شد و به خاطر فهرست شاعران فارسی و توصیف دقیق آثار اصلی شعر فارسی و مواد بیوگرافیک ارزشمندش به راهنمایی برای کاوش در ادبیات فارسی بدل شد.

در ۱۸۵۰ اسپنجر به عنوان ممتحن، مترجم رسمی دولت و دبیر Asiatic Society of Calcutta منصوب شد. در این مدت آثار زیادی منتشر کرد، از جمله «Dictionary of the Technical terms used in the sciences of the Musulmans» (۱۸۵۴) و «Ibn Hajar's biographical dictionary of persons who knew Mohammed» (۱۸۵۶).

در سال ۱۸۵۷ به عنوان استاد زبان‌های شرقی در دانشگاه برن منصوب شد و در سال ۱۸۸۱ به هایدلبرگ نقل مکان کرد. مجموعه ارزنده‌ای از کتیبه‌ها و دست‌نویس‌های عربی، فارسی، هندستانی و مواد چاپی او نهایتاً به کتابخانه دولتی برلین پیوست.
