تحلیل

بر پایه بررسی‌های بايلين، آدامز شخصیتی دارای ترکیبی از اهداف بلند و تعارض‌های درونی بود. او باور داشت که تفکیک قوا و تعادل میان نهادها برای مهار قدرت مطلوب است و در عین حال به نقش مشروعیت‌ساز و محدودکننده مردم توجه می‌کرد. این تحلیل، آدامز را در قالبی می‌بیند که هم به شدت عاطفی بود و هم به شدت به اصول قانونی پایبند بود تا از فساد قدرت جلوگیری کند.

آدامز با نقدهای معاصر نشان می‌دهد که تحول شخصیت او از adolescence طولانی تا بلوغ سیاسی، رویه‌ای پیوسته اما با گسست‌های کوچک بود که در نهایت به یک معماری سیاسی منجر شد که ساختارهای حکومتی را به صورت منصفانه و با ملاحظات اخلاقی اداره کند.
